1. DC Power Supplies (12V DC or 24V DC)
Why? AC power supplies are OK on vessels but require opto-isolation. Wherever possible it is far
more convenient to use a DC powered system where the voltage types match those of the
surrounding equipment.
2. Solid Industrial Chassis or Compact Chassis.
Why? Standard home computers have never been designed to go on a boat. There is major vibration
and shaking (bouncing over waves) to take into account that an off the shelf computer was
never intended for. This leads to a computer literally 'shaking itself to bits' , cards coming loose,
Unasked for shutdowns, reboots, blue screens and all the nasties you would rather avoid.
3. Filters on cooling fans
Why? Air is circulated within a computer case to keep the temperature of components down. Without
filtration more dust, salt air and moisture is sucked into the system which invariably shortens the
lifespan of the system
4. Quality Components
Why? Marine environments are fickle enough without problems associated with low quality componentry.
What may seem cheap now very quickly becomes expensive when you are about to arrive at
your mark and your system goes down for no other reason then poor quality components.
5. Environment (Ongoing Training and Learning)
Why? Dealing with someone involved in the industry who keeps up to date with the latest goings on
means you can be assured the system you buy will be up to standards for the latest available
software and technology.
6. Appropriate Warranty and Turnaround Times.
Why? This differs for each customer : For example a Commercial Fisherman who has a system not
working needs it fixed that day - fishing starts next morning and a day off in the middle of peak
season means losses of thousands of dollars - so a same day warranty in this instance is a must.
A return to base warranty with a weeks waiting for it to get processed in the queue is far from
a viable option.
7. Industry Specific.
Why? Systems designed for your specific purpose rather then adapted from a use far from similar.
8. Local Supply and Support.
Why? Having technical support from a local base allows for fast efficient turnaround with problems
or warranty issues. Local people with local knowledge.
